Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is a starting point for many couples facing infertility. Through the use of ovulation test kits and/or ultrasound, we are able to determine the most fertile time during your cycle. The procedure allows for sperm to be placed past the cervix, close to the top of the uterus, increasing the likelihood of conception. IUI can also be performed in conjunction with a course of medication that will increase the number of eggs available for fertilization.

How IUI is performed:

On the day of ovulation, a sperm sample is collected and washed to isolate the best sperm. These are then injected at the top of the uterus by placing a thin flexible tube (catheter) through the cervix. This allows more sperm to enter the fallopian tube(s) to reach the egg(s).

Who Might Benefit from IUI:

  • Mild Male Factor Infertility: Issues like low sperm count or poor sperm motility.
  • Unexplained Infertility: When no specific cause of infertility can be identified.
  • Cervical Factor Infertility: When conditions within the cervix hinder sperm from reaching the uterus.

Advantages of IUI:

  • Less invasive than in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • Generally less expensive than IVF.
  • Can be performed with or without fertility medications
