Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) can be part of the IVF process to help treat male factor infertility.
Here’s how it works:
- Sperm Selection: A single sperm is carefully selected from a semen sample.
- Egg Retrieval: Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries by passing a needle through the vaginal wall into the ovaries and using suction to remove the fluid and eggs from the follicles.
- Injection: Using a microscopic needle, the selected sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm (the inner part) of each mature egg.
- Fertilization: If successful, the injected egg will become fertilized and develop into an embryo.4
- Embryo Transfer: The developing embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus, where they may implant and result in pregnancy.
